Bangalore City Information

Bangalore, capital city of Indian sate Karnataka is located 1000m above sea level. City is located on Deccan plateau in south eastern part of Karnataka with around 6.5 million populations. Bangalore is India’s third most populous city and fifth largest metropolitan area.

Bangalore was founded by Kempe Gowda in 1537. The name Bangalore is obtained from Kannada word Bengaluru which means hero stone or city of guards. Kempe Gowda used to refer city as land of heroes. His successor built four famous towers in city marking city’s boundary. Under Vijaynagara rule city bloomed. In 1864 telegraph connections and rail connections were introduced in city. Bangalore is being referred city of gardens since 1927 which introduced construction of number of public parks, buildings, hospitals and museums. Rapid industrial growth and expansion of private companies as motor industries company led to establishment of Bangalore as Silicon Valley of India.

A large number of people from outside city have come to city to make it their hub as city offers more job opportunity and pleasurable life. City has a number of freshwater lakes and water tanks as Ulsoor Lake, Hebbal Lake, Madivala tank and Sankey Lake. Bangalore has average summers and winters with not too hot or too cold weather.
City is known for its public parks as Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park. Traditional festivals celebrated in city are Dussera, Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid, Christmas and Sankranthi. City holds film festivals every year. Bangalore offers diverse cuisine representing diversification in cultures. City is also famous for its nightlife. Several clubs, bars, pubs, discs and rock concerts in city make it pub capital of India.

Cricket is in gene of Bangalore, an array of cricketers is from city. Rahul Dravid, Syed Kirmani, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble, Gundappa Chandrasekhar are few to name. Educational institutes in Bangalore are Indian Business Academy, Xavier College, Indian Institute of Management, Presidency College, Christ College, International Institute of Information Technology and National Law School.

Shopping in Bangalore is a must for those looking for rose wood, sandalwood items, Mysore silks, ivory artifacts and lambani jewellery. City is also known for handloom silk and cotton sarees and cloth. The main shopping areas of city are Commercial Street, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Jayanagar Shopping Complex and Kempe Gowda road. Bangalore has an international airport HAL airport which handles number of international and domestic flights. A new Bangalore international airport is under construction. Indian railways connect city to other cities of India and metro system allows access within the city. Auto rickshaws, taxis and public buses are also an option to travel in city.

The Vidhana Saudha is a four storeyed building housing state legislative assembly and secretariat. The magnificent building constructed in neo-Dravidian style is made of Bangalore granite. Building is a perfect blend of ancient architecture and modern styles. The illuminated building at night looks stunning with musical fountains at surrounding parks. Tipu’s palace is built of teakwood and was constructed between 1781-1791. The floral designs on walls and ceilings make it noteworthy. This two storeyed building with ornate wooden structure and pillars, arches and balconies is a landmark of city. Bangalore palace build in 1887 by Chamaraja Wodeyar in Tudor-style is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The palace is famous for its architecture, carving and paintings. The grand entrance with floral motifs, moldings and relief paintings on ceilings in interior give this monument an edge over other places. Other famous attractions of city are Sri Banashankari Amma Temple, Attara Kacheri, State Archaeological Museum, Seshadri Iyer Memorial Hall, Fun World and number of emporiums.
